The story of Suzano begins in 1924 with Leon Feffer, a Ukrainian immigrant who started a paper trading business in Brazil. Facing difficulties importing paper during World War II, Feffer made a pivotal decision: to become a manufacturer himself. He sold his assets, including his family's home, to fund his first paper mill, which opened in São Paulo in 1941. A significant breakthrough came in the 1950s under the leadership of Leon's son, Max Feffer. At the time, paper was primarily made from pine, but Max led research into using eucalyptus as a viable alternative. This innovation was a game-changer, and by 1961, Suzano became the first company in the world to produce paper and pulp on an industrial scale using 100% eucalyptus fiber. This development revolutionized the industry in Brazil and globally. The company continued its growth trajectory and went public with an IPO on April 15, 1992. A landmark event in its modern history was the merger with Fibria in 2019. The deal created Suzano S.A., the world's largest producer of eucalyptus pulp. Today, the company is a global leader, operating with a vast production capacity and a focus on sustainable, bio-based solutions derived from its eucalyptus forests.
