Surgimap

Nemaris Inc., the developer of Surgimap, was established in 2008 to address a growing need within the medical community for a more efficient digital imaging platform. The company was co-founded by spine surgeon Dr. Frank Schwab and Virginie Lafage. Surgimap originated from the collaboration of spine surgeons, engineers, and researchers who aimed to create a freeware application to enhance surgical planning.

Surgimap provides a software platform specifically for preoperative planning and the analysis of medical images, targeting healthcare professionals, particularly spinal orthopedic surgeons. The software allows users to measure, annotate, and visualize radiographic data from sources like CT scans and X-rays to aid in surgical planning. Users can perform surgical simulations to visualize potential outcomes, a key feature for planning complex deformity treatments. The platform also serves as a universal image viewer and an encrypted database, enabling clinical collaboration and the sharing of cases among medical professionals. Initially offered as freeware, the company's business model included licensing its patient-specific surgical planning technology to spine implant manufacturers.

A significant milestone in the company's history was its acquisition by Globus Medical, a major musculoskeletal solutions company, on September 13, 2018. The acquisition was a strategic move for Globus Medical to integrate Surgimap's surgical planning technology with its ExcelsiusGPS robotic and navigation system. This integration aimed to streamline surgical workflows, enhance data analytics, and accelerate the development of new products in imaging, navigation, and robotics. Following the acquisition, Surgimap became an operating subsidiary, continuing to support surgeons and medical device representatives in planning and collaborating on cases.
