Suomen Lähikauppa Oy was a significant operator in the Finnish grocery retail market before its functions were integrated into Kesko. The company's origins trace back to 2005, through the merger of the daily goods retail businesses of Tradeka Oy and Wihuri Oy's Ruokamarkkinat. This strategic combination brought the Siwa, Valintatalo, and Euromarket chains from Tradeka, and the Ruokavarasto, Sesto, and Etujätti brands from Wihuri under a single entity. Initially named Tradeka Oy, the company rebranded as Suomen Lähikauppa Oy in December 2008.

The business model was centered on neighborhood convenience stores, operating a vast network across Finland. At its peak, the company managed national retail chains including Siwa, Valintatalo, and Euromarket, focusing on providing essential goods and services conveniently to local communities. After a period of underperformance, the private equity firm Triton acquired Suomen Lähikauppa in February 2013, viewing it as a turnaround opportunity. Triton initiated a comprehensive plan to upgrade the store network, improve operations, and strengthen the store brands.

A pivotal moment in the company's history occurred in November 2015, when Kesko Food Ltd, a subsidiary of Kesko Corporation, announced its agreement to acquire the entire share capital of Suomen Lähikauppa from Triton for approximately €60 million. The acquisition was finalized in April 2016, marking the end of Suomen Lähikauppa as an independent entity. Following the deal, Kesko began the process of converting the approximately 600 Siwa and Valintatalo stores into its own K-market branded stores, a move intended to bolster Kesko's presence in the neighborhood retail sector and achieve significant synergies in purchasing, logistics, and marketing. The company's name was officially changed to K-Market Oy in 2016.
