Sudameris
The largest bank in Paraguay by asset volume, offering commercial and corporate banking with a focus on the agricultural and industrial sectors.
Sudameris Bank, originally established as Banque Française et Italienne pour l'Amérique du Sud in 1910, began its operations in Paraguay in 1958. For decades, it remained a modest entity in the Paraguayan financial landscape.
A significant transformation occurred in 2004 when the Irish investment group Abbeyfield, led by Conor McEnroy, acquired the bank. At the time of the acquisition, Sudameris was the lowest-ranking bank in Paraguay. McEnroy, an Irish businessman, initiated a strategic overhaul, focusing the bank's efforts on the corporate and agricultural sectors, which are fundamental to the Paraguayan economy.
This new direction proved successful, leading to steady growth. A pivotal moment in the bank's history was its 2023 merger with Banco Regional. This strategic consolidation propelled Sudameris to the position of the largest bank in Paraguay in terms of total assets. The bank operates on a traditional banking model, generating revenue through net interest income from its loan portfolio, which includes commercial, agricultural, and consumer loans, as well as from fees for services. It serves a diverse client base, from large corporations and agricultural enterprises to individual consumers, offering a range of services including savings accounts, loans, and digital banking through its e-Bank platform.
