Subsclife, operating under the corporate name Social Interior Inc. since March 2022, provides a subscription-based service for furniture and home appliances in Japan. The company was founded in November 2016 by Ken Machino, who currently serves as the CEO. Machino's journey into the furniture industry was sparked by his personal experience while moving in 2017; he identified a market gap between high-priced designer furniture and uninspiring, mass-produced options. This insight, combined with his observation of the emerging subscription model for physical goods at a US venture event, led to the creation of Subsclife.
The service was officially launched in March 2018, pioneering the furniture subscription model in Japan. Initially, the venture began as the Japanese entity of the IoT furniture startup KAMARQ, where Machino served as representative. The subscription business was developed within KAMARQ before spinning out in 2019 to focus solely on the subscription model under the Subsclife name, a blend of "subscription" and "life". The business serves both individual consumers (B2C) and corporate clients (B2B), with the B2B segment showing significant growth, having contracted with over 1000 companies by early 2022. Corporate clients utilize the service for office setups, gaining the flexibility to adapt their workspaces and reduce significant upfront capital expenditure.
Subsclife's business model centers on offering new, brand-name furniture and appliances from over 600 partner brands for a monthly fee, starting from as low as 500 JPY. A key feature is that the total subscription payments will not exceed the retail price of the item, offering a financially sound alternative to purchasing outright. Customers can choose a subscription period and, at the end of the term, have the option to purchase, return, or extend the subscription. To support a circular economy, returned items are sold on its off-price marketplace, "subsclife SHARE" (formerly Subsclife Offprice), which also liquidates manufacturers' surplus inventory. This approach not only provides an affordable path to high-quality furnishings for consumers but also creates a new sales channel for manufacturers and contributes to waste reduction.
