Stupeflix SAS, a Paris-based startup founded in August 2008, provided a web-based video creation service. The company was established by Nicolas Steegmann, François Lagunas, and Etienne Albert, who had previously worked together at the French software company Exalead. Their objective was to simplify video creation for both general users and developers.
The company's core offering was an online platform that enabled users to combine photos, videos, music, maps, and text into shareable video content. This was delivered through several products, including Stupeflix Studio, an online video editor, and an API for automated video production. The platform allowed users to import media from their computers or online services like Flickr and DropBox. The business model involved generating revenue by selling the created videos for a small fee. Stupeflix was recognized as a winner at Seedcamp in 2008, securing €50,000 in funding.
In a significant milestone, GoPro acquired Stupeflix in March 2016 for a portion of a combined $105 million deal that also included another video company, Vemory. This acquisition was a strategic move by GoPro to enhance its mobile video editing capabilities. Following the acquisition, the Stupeflix team joined GoPro. The Stupeflix service was eventually closed to new users, with existing users having access until August 2018.
