Streetwise Media was a digital media company established by co-founders Chase Garbarino and Kevin McCarthy. The venture originated from their experiences at Hamilton College, where they ran an online publication called The Campus Word and developed an interest in digital media and user-generated content. After graduating in 2007, they moved to Boston to immerse themselves in the tech startup scene and subsequently launched BostInno in 2008. Initially a WordPress blog, BostInno evolved into a news platform covering local innovation across various sectors like technology, venture capital, and city news.
BostInno became the first and flagship property of Streetwise Media. The company's business model focused on creating local news platforms for the innovation economies in major US cities, targeting a readership of young professionals. The content was a mix of work from an editorial team and guest contributors through a community publishing platform. This approach allowed them to build a loyal and substantial audience. Following the success of BostInno, the company expanded by launching a second site, InTheCapital, in Washington, D.C.
In a significant milestone, Streetwise Media was acquired by American City Business Journals (ACBJ), a subsidiary of Advance Publications, in November 2012. At the time of the acquisition, Streetwise Media's websites were attracting over 2.6 million unique visitors and generating more than 9 million page views monthly. Following the acquisition, Garbarino and McCarthy remained with the company as CEO and CTO, respectively, with the goal of expanding the local news platform to more cities with the support of ACBJ's national infrastructure. The company was later known as American Inno and grew to a network of digital media properties in over a dozen cities.
