Storify was a social network service that allowed users to create stories and timelines by curating content from various social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. The concept was created in 2010 by co-founders Burt Herman, a former Associated Press correspondent, and Xavier Damman, a Belgian computer scientist. Damman moved to Silicon Valley with the vision of amplifying important voices from social media, which became the foundation for the company. Herman's background as a journalist for The Associated Press, where the term "storify" was commonly used by editors, inspired the company's name and its focus on journalistic storytelling.
The company launched its private beta at TechCrunch Disrupt in September 2010 and gained early traction, winning the Startup Accelerator at South by Southwest in 2011 and securing $2 million in funding from Khosla Ventures. Its public beta went live in April 2011 and was recognized by TIME as one of the 50 best websites of that year. Storify's primary clients were media organizations, journalists, brands, and agencies, who used the platform to cover breaking news, social movements, and online conversations by embedding curated social content into their articles. The business model included a free version alongside premium and VIP plans that offered features for enterprise clients.
In September 2013, Storify was acquired by Livefyre, a real-time conversation and social curation platform, with the goal of integrating Storify's editorial tools into Livefyre's enterprise offerings. Subsequently, Adobe Systems acquired Livefyre in May 2016. Following the acquisition, Storify's standalone service was deemed incompatible with Adobe's enterprise strategy. The company announced in December 2017 that no new accounts could be created, and the service was officially shut down on May 16, 2018. Users were directed to Storify 2, a version integrated into the Adobe Experience Manager Livefyre product.
