The story of Sterling and Wilson begins not in a boardroom, but with a friendship. In the 1920s, an electrical contractor named Mehervan Daruvala founded Wilson Electric Works. His company soon began working with Shapoorji Pallonji Construction, a firm run by Shapoorji Mistry Sr. This professional relationship evolved, and in 1971, Wilson Electric Works merged with Sterling Investments, a company within the Shapoorji Pallonji Group, to officially form Sterling and Wilson. For decades, the company operated as a major engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) player, expanding its services from electrical and plumbing to data centers and power generation. A pivotal shift occurred in 2011 when the company launched its solar EPC division, tapping into the growing global demand for renewable energy. This solar business proved so successful that it was demerged into a separate entity. In August 2019, this new entity, Sterling and Wilson Solar, went public with an IPO on Indian stock exchanges, a major milestone led by the founding Daruvala and Mistry families. The company's trajectory attracted significant attention, and in 2022, a new chapter began when Reliance New Energy, a subsidiary of the massive Reliance Industries, completed the acquisition of a 40% stake in the company. This move solidified Sterling and Wilson's position as a key global player in the renewable energy transition.
