The story of Sterling Infrastructure begins in 1955 in Sterling Heights, Michigan. Founded as an underground infrastructure company, it spent over two decades building a solid reputation in the local market. However, the early 1980s brought a harsh economic downturn to Michigan's building sector, forcing a critical decision. Instead of shutting down, the company’s leadership made a pivotal move. In 1981, they relocated the entire operation to Houston, Texas, a more active construction market, and rebranded as Texas Sterling Construction Co. This strategic shift paid off. The company expanded its services, adding a paving division in 1990 and opening offices in Dallas and San Antonio over the next decade. Capitalizing on its growth, Sterling Construction Company Inc. went public in 2004, listing on the American Stock Exchange. A significant transformation began around 2015 when the company decided to evolve from a heavy civil construction firm, focused primarily on highways and bridges, into a diversified infrastructure solutions provider. This new strategy targeted high-growth, high-margin sectors. A series of acquisitions followed, including the notable purchase of Petillo Incorporated in 2022 for $195 million, which expanded Sterling's footprint in specialty site development for e-commerce customers. The company officially changed its name to Sterling Infrastructure, Inc. in 2022 to reflect this broader focus, now encompassing E-Infrastructure, Transportation, and Building Solutions. This strategic pivot has positioned Sterling as a key player in developing large-scale sites for data centers, manufacturing, and e-commerce.
