Steady Health operated as a virtual-first diabetes clinic, founded in 2017 by Henrik Berggren and Bjorn Hansell. Berggren, the company's CEO, was motivated to start the company after his own diagnosis with diabetes while serving in the Swedish Military. This personal experience with the condition, and the profound impact of using a continuous glucose monitor (CGM), fueled his mission to create a more modern and connected care model. Before founding Steady Health, Berggren was a seasoned entrepreneur in the startup world, having previously had a company acquired by Dropbox, which brought him to Silicon Valley.
The company's core business was providing specialized medical care for patients with diabetes through a digital platform. This platform integrated data from wearable CGM devices, which constantly track blood sugar levels, allowing for a data-driven approach to treatment. The business model was a direct-to-consumer, membership-based service where patients received ongoing support from a dedicated care team, including endocrinologists. This team used the continuous data stream, along with information on diet and exercise, to provide personalized insights and proactive care management, replacing the traditional, infrequent hospital visits. Communication occurred through text messaging and video calls, making care more convenient and accessible.
In June 2021, Steady Health was acquired by Carbon Health, a primary care provider aiming to build an omnichannel healthcare model. The acquisition was a strategic move for Carbon Health to integrate device-driven management for chronic conditions into its services, starting with diabetes. Following the acquisition, the Steady Health team and its technology were integrated into Carbon Health to expand these specialized services across the country. The Steady Health app and service were officially retired in April 2022, with patients fully transitioned to the new, integrated Carbon Health diabetes program.
