Stafi, a portmanteau of Staking and Finance, is a decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol founded in 2019 by Liam Young and Tore Zhang. The firm addresses the core conflict between token liquidity and network security in Proof-of-Stake (PoS) blockchains. Traditionally, staking assets to secure a network renders them illiquid, preventing holders from reacting to market movements or utilizing their capital in other DeFi applications. Stafi resolves this by issuing derivative tokens, known as rTokens, to users who stake their PoS assets through the protocol's smart contracts.

The core of Stafi's business is its liquid staking solution. When a user stakes a PoS token such as ETH, ATOM, or SOL, the protocol mints a corresponding rToken (e.g., rETH, rATOM, rSOL) at a 1:1 ratio. These rTokens represent the user's staked principal plus accruing staking rewards. A key feature is that these rTokens are fully tradable and can be used as collateral in various DeFi protocols, effectively unlocking the liquidity of the staked assets while continuing to earn staking rewards. The protocol is built upon a multi-layer architecture, with a foundational blockchain system based on Substrate, a contract layer for staking, and an application layer that supports a trading market for rTokens.

The protocol's native utility token is FIS. It serves multiple functions within the ecosystem: it is used for paying transaction fees, minting and redeeming rTokens, and participating in network security through staking. Furthermore, FIS token holders have governance rights, allowing them to vote on proposed changes and upgrades to the protocol, ensuring a decentralized and community-aligned development path. Revenue for the protocol is generated through service fees charged for providing liquidity and staking services. Stafi has undergone multiple security audits from firms like CertiK and PeckShield to ensure the safety of its smart contracts.
