In 1987, five construction professionals—Ilpo Kokkila, Kari Filppula, Eero Nuutinen, Jorma Haapamäki, and Kalevi Härkönen—came together to form a new kind of construction company. They called it SRV Viitoset, with 'SRV' standing for Suomen rakennusvienti (Finnish construction export) and 'Viitoset' meaning a group of five, a nod to its founders. The company's very first project was a meat processing plant in Rakvere, Estonia, signaling its international ambitions from day one. The company navigated the Finnish construction recession of the 1990s through a series of acquisitions, expanding its domestic footprint. A pivotal moment arrived in 2007 when SRV Yhtiöt went public, listing on the Helsinki Stock Exchange. This wasn't just a financial milestone; it was a strategic move to fuel growth for major undertakings, such as the development of the landmark Kamppi Center in Helsinki. SRV's business model is centered on being a project management contractor and developer, focusing on housing, business premises, and infrastructure projects primarily in Finnish growth centers.
