SpoonJoy, operating under Emvito Technologies Pvt Ltd, was a food-tech startup founded in 2014 by Manish Jethani, Sourabh Agarwal, Prateek Agrawal, and Kanishk Tyagi, all batchmates from IIT-Roorkee. The company was established with the mission to provide affordable and accessible healthy food options. SpoonJoy's primary offering was a subscription-based service delivering meals, freshly cut fruits, and snacks to offices and homes, targeting busy professionals. The business model focused on controlling the entire supply chain, from menu creation and food preparation to packaging and delivery, to optimize costs and maintain quality.
The founders brought diverse experience to the venture. Manish Jethani had previously worked at several startups, including FashionandYou.com and UrbanTouch.com. His co-founders also had strong technical and analytical backgrounds from companies like Unbxd, Flipkart, and McKinsey & Co. This collective expertise was aimed at building SpoonJoy as a technology-driven supply chain company rather than just a food startup.
The company gained early traction, receiving an undisclosed amount of angel funding in December 2014 from prominent figures like Flipkart's co-founders Sachin Bansal and Mekin Maheshwari. This was followed by a $1 million Series A round from SAIF Partners in May 2015 to scale operations and expand into new cities like Delhi and Mumbai. At its peak, the service was clocking nearly 1000 orders a day in Bangalore. However, the startup faced challenges in securing further funding and scaled down its operations in late 2015. In October 2015, SpoonJoy was acqui-hired by hyperlocal delivery platform Grofers, primarily for its talent. Following the acquisition, the SpoonJoy business was discontinued, and its team was integrated into Grofers. The founders, Manish Jethani and Sourabh Agarwal, later went on to establish the no-code data pipeline platform, Hevo Data.
