Splitted-Desktop Systems SAS was a French engineering firm established in 2006 by founder Jean-Marie Verdun. The company specialized in designing computer and datacenter infrastructure built upon Open Compute and open-source technologies. Its offerings included the development of servers, workstations, and internet terminals for commercial clients. The firm's product line featured components such as hard drives, SAS connectors, power inputs, processors, and memory cards, allowing customers to acquire instruments tailored to their specific operational needs.
A significant milestone for the company was achieving Gold status in the Open Compute Project in 2015, recognizing its deep involvement in open hardware. The team possessed considerable expertise across electrical engineering, mechanical and thermal studies, low-level firmware, and software security. One of its notable technologies was Linuxboot, an open-source BIOS strategic initiative developed with major technology companies. The company also developed a scalable recertification program for Open Compute hardware, enabling used data center equipment to perform comparably to new equipment.
In a strategic move to create a circular economy model for IT hardware, Splitted-Desktop Systems was acquired by the Silicon Valley-based ITRenew in June 2018. The acquisition also included the company's US subsidiary, Horizon Computing Solutions, with Jean-Marie Verdun joining the ITRenew team. Before the acquisition, Splitted-Desktop Systems had secured investments from various sources, including the European Regional Development Fund (Brandenburg), ISF PME 2009, IncubAlliance, Limousin Business Angels, and Limousin Participations.
