OS Custom Map | Fabric Maps | Flag Masks - Wearable Personalised Maps for the Outdoors.
SplashMaps offers a modern alternative to traditional paper and digital maps by printing them on durable, all-weather fabric. The company was founded in November 2012 by David Overton and Ian Holt. The idea originated from Overton's frustration with flimsy paper maps while cycling, which reminded him of the silk escape and evasion maps used during wartime. His background as an engineer, marketer, and former Innovation Manager at Ordnance Survey, Great Britain's national mapping agency, provided the expertise needed to develop the concept.
The business was launched following a successful Kickstarter campaign in late 2013, which was one of the first of its kind for a UK company. SplashMaps then secured a seed funding round in February 2014 from Lokku. The company targets outdoor enthusiasts such as hikers, cyclists, runners, and paddlers who need a reliable navigation tool that can withstand mud, wind, snow, and rain. Revenue is generated through direct-to-consumer sales of pre-designed and custom-made fabric maps and accessories via its website. The company also handles bulk orders for corporate gifts and events.
The core product is a map printed on a special polyester fabric, some of which is made from 100% recycled plastic bottles. This material makes the maps washable, wearable, lightweight, and virtually indestructible. Unlike paper maps, they don't tear or disintegrate when wet, and unlike GPS devices, they don't rely on batteries. Customers can choose from a range of existing maps covering national parks and popular routes, or they can create a fully personalized map. The 'Make-a-Map' feature allows users to center the map anywhere in the world, select a specific scale (such as 1:25,000 or 1:40,000), and add custom titles. The map data is sourced from reputable providers like Ordnance Survey in Great Britain, USGS in the USA, and OpenStreetMap for worldwide coverage. Beyond standard maps, SplashMaps also produces 'Toobs'—stretchy, wearable map tubes that can function as a scarf or bandana—as well as tablecloths and even shower curtains.
