His background also includes leading initiatives for Spectrum Technologies USA (STUSA) in India and developing a 208 MW gas-based power plant. Dr. Rao holds a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, providing a strong technical foundation for the company's endeavors.
SREL's core business revolves around developing biogas projects in rural markets. The company utilizes anaerobic digestion to process organic waste materials—such as pressmud from sugarcane, sugar beet, and corn cobs—into Bio-CNG (Compressed Bio Gas) and organic manure. This process addresses waste management challenges while creating a dual revenue stream. The produced Bio-CNG, a clean fuel with over 92% methane content, is sold to industrial clients as an alternative to fossil fuels. Simultaneously, the nutrient-rich organic manure is supplied to farmers, enhancing agricultural productivity and soil health without chemical inputs.
Operating a comprehensive business model, SREL offers end-to-end services to organic waste producers. These services encompass project management, plant design, construction, maintenance, and ongoing technological support. A notable project is the partnership with Warana Sugarcane Cooperative in Maharashtra, where pressmud is converted into CBG and organic manure. The company was acquired by Refex Sustainability Solutions in February 2025.
