Spectral Genomics, Inc. operated as a technology spin-off from the Baylor College of Medicine, establishing its position in the molecular genetics and diagnostics sector. The company was founded in February 2000 by BCM Technologies, licensing technology developed by founders Alan Bradley, Ph.D., and Wei-wen Cai, Ph.D. Its primary focus was on developing and marketing products and services for molecular genetics, including genomic profiling services for academic and industrial research laboratories.
The company's core offering revolved around its proprietary Array Comparative Genomic Hybridization (aCGH) technology, which provided a high-resolution, global view of the human genome. This technology, along with related analysis software, was designed to help researchers in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and clinical cytogenetics identify chromosomal abnormalities. Specifically, it enabled the identification of the exact locations of chromosomal deletions and amplifications linked to an increased risk of genetic diseases, including cancer and pre- and post-natal disorders.
Spectral Genomics catered to a client base of academic and industrial research laboratories, as well as pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. The business model involved the sale of its aCGH microarrays and accompanying software. In March 2005, a significant milestone was reached when GE Healthcare became the exclusive distributor for Spectral Genomics' products outside of North America. The company successfully raised a total of $12.3 million over two funding rounds; a Series A round of $3 million in August 2001 and a Series B round of $9.3 million in March 2004. Investors included BCM Ventures, Burrill & Co, and BioTex Finance. In a strategic move to bolster its capabilities in screening and diagnostics, PerkinElmer, Inc. acquired Spectral Genomics in May 2006, which consequently ended the distribution agreement with GE.
