The company was originally established by Jason Andrews, with Curt Blake later joining and serving as CEO and President for a significant period. Blake, a lawyer with a background in satellite communications and software, steered the company through a decade of growth, leveraging his expertise to navigate the complex legal and commercial landscape of the space industry. The firm carved out a niche as a rideshare provider, purchasing space on various launch vehicles—from small rockets to large ones like SpaceX's Falcon 9—and then selling that capacity to multiple customers, primarily small satellite operators. Spaceflight's core offering encompassed not just the launch slot but also payload processing, integration, and mission planning, effectively acting as a one-stop shop for getting satellites into orbit. A significant achievement was the SSO-A mission in 2018, which launched 64 satellites from 34 different organizations on a single Falcon 9 rocket, a record-setting dedicated rideshare mission at the time. The company also developed its own hardware, the Sherpa-NG family of orbital transfer vehicles (OTVs), designed to deploy satellites into precise orbits after the primary launch vehicle reaches its initial destination. In 2023, the landscape for Spaceflight shifted when it was acquired by Firefly Aerospace. The acquisition integrated Spaceflight's experienced mission management team and rideshare expertise directly into Firefly's operations.
