Société Générale Mauritanie (SGM) provides universal banking services across Mauritania. The institution was established in January 2007 as a subsidiary of the international financial group Société Générale.
In August 2025, the French group Société Générale finalized the sale of its Mauritanian subsidiary to a consortium of investors, including the London-based management company Enko Capital and the investment firm Oronte. This acquisition is part of a broader strategy by Société Générale to divest from several African markets. The new ownership aims to strengthen the bank's role in financing Mauritania's economy, with a focus on strategic sectors like mining, gas, agriculture, and support for SMEs. Eric-Bastien Ballouhey, who was involved in the bank's initial launch, remains as chairman of the board, and Nicolas Roca returned as CEO in April 2025 to lead the new phase of development.
The bank serves both retail clients (individuals and professionals) and corporate clients, including companies, NGOs, and institutions. For individuals, SGM offers a range of products including current accounts, savings accounts, various consumer and real estate loans, and an array of Visa and private label bank cards. The bank also provides remote banking through its SG-Connect platform and insurance services. For businesses, services include corporate account management, electronic payment terminals, and financing for operational cycles and investments. SGM is also active in international trade, offering documentary credits, international guarantees, and management of international transfers through its SOGEC@SHNET online banking service.
