Announced in May 2025, the company was co-founded by CEO Kesha Sebert, the multi-platinum pop artist, alongside CTO Alan Cannistraro and COO Lagan Sebert. The platform's creation was heavily influenced by Kesha's personal decade-long legal battle to regain control over her own voice and image after signing a restrictive contract at age 18. Her goal is to reform the power dynamics within the music industry to favor artists.

The service connects a community of songwriters, artists, producers, instrumentalists, singers, and sound engineers, providing them with professional networking opportunities without needing to enter into potentially exploitative contracts. It serves as a marketplace and collaborative space, aiming to remove traditional industry gatekeepers and empower the creators themselves. To engage the community, Smash hosts events like remix challenges, where participants can work with stems from Kesha's own music for a chance to have their work officially released and receive royalties.
