NovaSom, formerly known as Sleep Solutions, Inc., was a diagnostic-service provider specializing in home-based testing for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Founded in 1992, the company was a pioneer in its field, developing the first FDA-cleared home sleep test designed for unattended patient use. The firm was incorporated in Palo Alto, California, under the guidance of medical device inventor Thomas Fogarty, and later moved its headquarters to Glen Burnie, Maryland.
NovaSom's business model focused on providing a more convenient and cost-effective alternative to traditional, in-facility sleep lab testing. The company manufactured devices like the NovaSom® HST and the second-generation wireless AccuSom® HST, which were used in conjunction with its proprietary cloud-based platform, MediTrack®. This platform allowed physicians to order tests, access data, and receive interpretations from board-certified sleep specialists, often within 72 hours. NovaSom's services were aimed at physicians, private insurers, government organizations like the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and public health organizations. Revenue was generated by partnering with major health insurers, and by 2012, its services were covered for over 165 million people in the U.S.
Despite its innovations and significant venture capital backing from firms like TPG Biotech and Johnson & Johnson, NovaSom struggled to achieve profitability. After a new wireless device launched between 2010 and 2012 failed to generate expected sales, the company faced financial difficulties. In August 2019, NovaSom, Inc. filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Following the bankruptcy filing, the company's assets were acquired by SleepMed, a subsidiary of the French startup BioSerenity, in September 2019.
