Lynx Mixed Reality is a French technology startup founded in Paris in 2019 by Stan Larroque, who created the company right out of school. The company's core focus is on the development of mixed reality (MR) hardware, positioning itself as a European alternative to major US and Chinese tech companies. Larroque was inspired by early VR devices but saw a need for a better connection to the real world, which led to the creation of Lynx and its flagship product, the Lynx R-1 headset.
The Lynx R-1 is a standalone headset capable of both virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) through a high-resolution color passthrough system. It is built on Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR2 chipset and features a unique four-fold catadioptric freeform prism lens, which allows for a more compact and lightweight design compared to many competitors. The device can be used untethered or connected to a PC and is designed as an open platform, with an auditable code base and compatibility with standards like OpenXR to give developers more control. Key features include 6DoF (six degrees of freedom) tracking, native hand-tracking powered by Ultraleap, and expandable storage via a microSD card. The company emphasizes a "privacy-by-design" philosophy, allowing the headset to be used completely offline and giving users the ability to deactivate sensors.
Lynx's business model is centered on the sale of its hardware and revenue from its app store, explicitly avoiding data monetization. The company targets both enterprise and developer markets, with applications in professional training, remote assistance, healthcare, and education. After a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2021 and a Series A funding round of $4 million in May 2022 led by Somnium Space, Lynx has raised a total of approximately $6.8 million. The company began shipping its first commercial units in early 2024.
