Skyrenu Technologies Inc. is a cleantech company that develops and markets modular direct atmospheric CO2 capture (DAC) systems. Founded in 2021 by CEO Gabriel Vézina and CTO Martin Brouillette, the company originated from student research at the University of Sherbrooke dating back to 2018. The impetus for the company's creation was a desire to combat climate change, inspired by the founders' children. A significant milestone was achieved when the university team won a US$250,000 XPRIZE for Carbon Removal student award in 2021, which validated their technology and led to the company's formation.
The company's core technology is a patented, integrated system that captures CO2 from the air using a proprietary solid sorbent in an energy-efficient, continuous process. A key feature is its ability to be installed directly at sequestration sites, which eliminates the need for long-distance CO2 transportation. The captured CO2 is then used in a rock carbonation process that mineralizes the gas, permanently locking it away in mining waste, such as asbestos tailings. This process has the dual benefit of decontaminating hazardous mining sites by turning asbestos fibers into inert, harmless materials like gravel. The technology is designed to be modular, scalable, and powered by renewable energy, with its first units having a capacity of 50 tonnes of CO2 per year.
Skyrenu serves clients and partners in the carbon removal market, aiming to help businesses and organizations achieve carbon neutrality goals by generating offset credits. The business model involves selling its DAC units to project developers like Deep Sky, which operates the systems to validate their performance for larger-scale commercial deployment. In June 2025, Skyrenu secured a pre-seed financing round with participation from Investissement Québec and the Netherlands-based CarbonFix fund, aimed at scaling its operations. The company employs around fifteen people and utilizes a lightweight manufacturing model with a focus on Quebec-based industrial partnerships.
