In 2003, former journalist Jatin Singh launched Skymet Weather Services to address a gap he experienced firsthand: the difficulty media houses faced in obtaining reliable weather data in India. Starting with a clear mission, Skymet became the first private company to provide weather forecasts and graphics to Indian media outlets. The company began by serving media clients like Zee News and Sahara Samay but soon recognized a larger opportunity at the intersection of weather and agriculture. This led Skymet to expand its services to sectors like agriculture, insurance, and energy, providing crucial data for risk assessment and operational planning. To power this, Skymet built its own network of automatic weather stations, which has grown to be the largest in India. A significant milestone occurred when the company began securing venture capital. It received Series A funding from Omnivore Partners, followed by a $4.5 million Series B round led by an investment arm of Daily Mail and General Trust plc. In 2017, Skymet raised approximately $10 million in a Series C round to further expand its weather station network and data analytics capabilities. This funding solidified Skymet's position as a key player in providing climate and crop analytics that reach millions of farmers and support major financial institutions.
