Skinome Project is a Swedish skincare company that develops and markets fresh skincare products designed to support the skin's natural microbiome. The company was founded in Stockholm in 2018 by Dr. Johanna Gillbro, a skin researcher with over 20 years of experience in dermatology and product development. Gillbro's personal experience with the skin condition vitiligo as a child, and her subsequent research, led her to recognize the negative impact of preservatives and additives in traditional skincare on the skin's bacterial flora.
Skinome's core product philosophy revolves around "fresh skincare". Their products are manufactured in small batches in Stockholm and are free from traditional preservatives, perfumes, and other additives. This approach necessitates that most products be stored in a refrigerator and have a shorter shelf life, typically around three months after opening, to maintain the efficacy of the active ingredients. The formulations are based on ingredients naturally found in the skin, such as postbiotics, ceramides, squalane, and vitamins, to strengthen the skin barrier and balance the microbiome.
The business operates on a direct-to-consumer model through its website, offering products on a subscription basis to ensure customers receive fresh batches regularly. This model also provides a 20% discount on products. The product line includes cleansers, emulsions, concentrates, and sunscreens tailored to various skin conditions like sensitivity, rosacea, dryness, and acne. In March 2021, Skinome secured SEK 11.5 million in a funding round from investors including BioGaia Invest and Spotchain to collaborate on developing microbiome-friendly probiotic skincare. The company holds a pending patent for a preservative-free, self-preserving composition for topical application. All product bottles are made from ocean waste plastic, reflecting a commitment to sustainability.
