In 1980, a fishing guide in Jackson, Wyoming named John Simms decided anglers deserved better gear to extend their time on the water. He founded Simms Fishing Products to create higher quality waders than what was available, introducing innovative neoprene waders to the US market. The company's trajectory shifted in 1993 when K.C. Walsh, a passionate angler and management consultant, acquired the business. Walsh relocated the headquarters to Bozeman, Montana, positioning Simms in the heart of fly-fishing country. Soon after, a pivotal partnership was formed with W. L. Gore & Associates, allowing Simms to introduce market-defining breathable waders with Gore-Tex technology. This focus on quality and innovation established Simms as a premium brand, known for durable, American-made products. The company built a loyal following among serious anglers and professional guides. A significant chapter in the Simms story unfolded in July 2022 when Vista Outdoor, a large conglomerate of outdoor brands, announced it was acquiring Simms for $192.5 million. The deal signaled a major validation of the brand's market leadership and premium positioning. Despite the new ownership, Vista Outdoor stated its intention to keep the company's operations and headquarters in Bozeman, Montana.
