SiGe Semiconductor was a fabless semiconductor company that designed and supplied radio frequency (RF) front-end solutions for wireless applications. The company operated on a fabless manufacturing model, meaning it focused on the design and sale of hardware devices and semiconductor chips while outsourcing the fabrication to a specialized manufacturer. This approach allowed SiGe to concentrate on optimizing designs to lower costs and improve performance.
The company's product portfolio included highly integrated solutions such as power amplifiers, front-end modules (FEMs), transceivers, and GPS receivers. These components were engineered for a variety of wireless networking standards, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, WiMAX, GPS, and ZigBee. SiGe's solutions were designed to offer a combination of low power consumption for extended battery life, superior signal handling, and high levels of integration. Key clients included major consumer electronics and computing manufacturers like Cisco, Dell, HP, Microsoft, Nintendo, Samsung, and Sony.
In May 2011, Skyworks Solutions, Inc. announced a definitive agreement to acquire SiGe Semiconductor for $210 million in cash, with an additional $65 million contingent on performance targets. The acquisition was finalized in June 2011. The deal was a strategic move for Skyworks to complement its wide-area front-end solutions with SiGe's short-range, silicon-based products, thereby expanding its portfolio for high-growth markets such as smartphones, tablets, gaming consoles, and home automation systems. At the time of the acquisition, Sohail Khan served as the president and CEO of SiGe Semiconductor.
