Founded in 2001 by Ed Stevens, Shopatron emerged as a cloud-based e-commerce order management solution provider headquartered in San Luis Obispo, California. Stevens identified a critical point of friction for manufacturers entering the e-commerce space: the risk of competing with their established retail partners. Shopatron was designed to alleviate this channel conflict by enabling manufacturers to accept online orders on their own websites and route them for fulfillment through a distributed network of their retail partners.
The company's core offering was a sophisticated order management platform that powered features like in-store pickup, ship-from-store, and inventory lookup across multiple locations. This model allowed manufacturers to sell directly to consumers without alienating their dealer network, as local retailers would fulfill the orders and capture the sale. The platform served a wide range of clients, from large manufacturers to multi-channel retailers and franchise groups, working with over 1,000 brands and 20,000 retail partners across more than 40 industries. Revenue was generated through its software solutions that connected a brand's website to its physical fulfillment locations.
After raising $6 million in funding, Shopatron grew to employ around 160 people in San Luis Obispo and an additional 10 in England. A significant milestone occurred in November 2015 when the company was acquired by Vista Equity Partners, a private equity firm specializing in software and technology. This acquisition was part of a broader strategy by Vista to create a comprehensive omnichannel commerce provider. Shortly after, in January 2016, Shopatron was merged with e-commerce platform MarketLive and mobile point-of-sale provider Fiverun. The combined entity was rebranded as Kibo, effectively marking the end of the Shopatron brand.
