Shipay operates as a payment integration hub, founded in Brazil in 2019 by Luiz Coimbra, Charles Hagler, Paulo Loureiro, and Fabio Ikeno, all of whom possess backgrounds in technology and finance. Coimbra previously served as a superintendent at Itaú Unibanco, while Hagler held director positions at Embraer and TOTVS. The company was established to address the challenges retailers faced with the growing number of digital wallet QR Code payments, which created issues with fraud risk, payment confirmation, and daily cash reconciliation.
The firm's core business is to simplify the acceptance of digital payments for merchants by unifying multiple payment methods into a single integration point. Through its API, Shipay connects to a retailer’s existing Point of Sale (POS), ERP, e-commerce platform, or other sales channels, enabling them to accept payments from a wide array of digital wallets, Pix, and even cryptocurrencies. This integrated approach provides merchants with immediate payment confirmation and streamlined financial reconciliation. The company serves a diverse client base, ranging from small neighborhood stores to large enterprises like Porto Seguro and Burger King.
A significant milestone occurred in August 2025, when B3, the Brazilian stock exchange, acquired a 62% stake in Shipay for R$ 37 million. This acquisition followed a pre-existing partnership and aims to strengthen B3's position in the credit infrastructure market, particularly focusing on the upcoming digital transformation of trade receivables (duplicatas escriturais) in Brazil. Prior to this, in late 2020, Shipay had secured a seed investment of an undisclosed amount from Laércio Cosentino, the founder of TOTVS, and João Augusto Valente, a co-founder of Grupo ABC. The company has demonstrated significant growth, reporting that it processed over R$15 billion across 28 million transactions in 2022.
