Shareholder InSite operated as a specialized provider of solutions for shareholder data management, analytics, reporting, and valuation, catering specifically to venture capital (VC), private equity (PE) investors, and the private companies within their portfolios. The company was formed in 2012 through the merger of CapControls, led by CEO Joe Maxwell, and Qval LLC, founded by Brett Suchor. This merger was reportedly prompted by a suggestion from a mutual client in Silicon Valley.
The firm addressed the increasing demand for transparency and regulatory compliance in the private capital markets. Its cloud-based platform offered tools for managing investment and financial documents, analyzing various financing scenarios, and performing valuations, including 409A and FAS 157 (ASC 820) reports. The product suite, which included the marquee offerings Qval and CapControls, was designed to help CFOs, controllers, and their investors track, manage, and analyze shareholder and financial data throughout the capital lifecycle. The business model focused on providing a comprehensive software-based toolkit that managed portfolio data for capital structure, developed financial measurements, and streamlined shareholder communications.
In August 2012, Shareholder InSite acquired the Venture Services Division of Quist Valuation, a move supported by a $4.25 million Series C funding round led by BIP Opportunities Fund. This strategic acquisition enhanced its valuation service capabilities. By 2014, the company had attracted several investors, including BIP Ventures, Bluff Point Associates, and Council Capital. On November 4, 2014, Shareholder InSite was acquired by Ipreo, a global provider of market intelligence and productivity solutions for capital markets professionals. Following the acquisition, Shareholder InSite became the foundation for Ipreo's new Alternative Assets business division, with its management team, including CEO Joe Maxwell, leading the new vertical from their Nashville, Tennessee headquarters.
