Serial 1 Cycle Company originated as a "skunkworks" project within Harley-Davidson's Product Development Center in 2018, initiated by a small group of motorcycle and bicycle enthusiasts. The project aimed to leverage Harley-Davidson's expertise in two-wheel electric propulsion and product development. The company's name, "Serial 1," pays homage to Harley-Davidson's first motorcycle from 1903, affectionately known as "Serial Number One". In October 2020, this internal project was officially spun off to become an independent entity, combining the motorcycle giant's development capabilities with the agility of a startup dedicated exclusively to e-bikes.
The company's business is the design and manufacturing of premium electric bicycles for urban commuters and recreational cyclists. It operates in the premium e-bike market, selling its products through a network of dealers and direct-to-consumer channels. A significant milestone occurred in November 2023 when Serial 1 was acquired by LEV Manufacturing, Inc., a Florida-based company with extensive experience in Light Electric Vehicle (LEV) production, in a deal that also involved mobility-focused investment firm Lane VC. This acquisition is set to relocate the brand to Florida, bring assembly to the USA, and is expected to lower production costs and consumer prices. The official relaunch with new product versions is anticipated for early 2025.
Serial 1's e-bikes are pedal-assist only and are engineered for a seamless riding experience, with a focus on human-centered design and centralized mass for superior handling. Key features across their models, such as the MOSH/CTY and RUSH/CTY, include integrated batteries, mid-drive motors, and maintenance-free Gates Carbon Belt Drives. Certain models offer advanced functionalities like intelligent auto-shifting. The product lineup consists of Class 1 e-bikes with assistance up to 20 mph and Class 3 models reaching up to 28 mph. The bikes feature hydraulic disc brakes, integrated lighting, and app connectivity for digital interaction.
