Sensorita is an Oslo-based technology company founded in 2020 by CEO Ulrikke Lien and CTO Emil Skar. The venture originated from the sensor and data science community at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), where Lien's master's thesis project laid the company's foundation and Skar gained initial insights into the waste industry's challenges during an internship. The co-founders developed their initial sensor technology in a garage, initially focusing on municipal waste before pivoting to the construction and industrial sectors, which presented clearer market needs.
The company provides a business-to-business (B2B) solution aimed at waste management companies, particularly those servicing construction, industrial, and commercial clients. Its core offering is an AI-driven monitoring solution that utilizes rugged, retrofittable sensors combining radar and GPS technology. These sensors are attached to large waste containers to capture radar images of the contents multiple times per hour. The data is sent to a cloud platform where machine learning algorithms, trained on millions of images, analyze it to determine container fill levels, location, and potentially the types of materials inside. This process creates a "digital twin" for each container, providing waste companies with real-time visibility into their assets.
This technology addresses the widespread issue of waste companies having limited data on their container fleets, which often leads to inefficient logistics, reactive planning, and unnecessary costs and emissions. By providing detailed analytics and insights, Sensorita enables its clients to optimize collection routes, improve logistics, automate pickup orders, and enhance the planning of recycling processes. A key milestone for the company was securing $3.25 million in seed funding in July 2024, in a round led by construction technology specialist Brick & Mortar Ventures with participation from Telenor. This capital is intended to support team expansion and further technological development, including enhancing the sensors' capability to identify materials and creating a virtual assistant for the industry.
