SemVox GmbH is a German technology company specializing in conversational and multimodal AI solutions for human-machine interaction. Founded in 2008 as a spin-off from the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), the company was established by Norbert Pfleger, Jan Schehl, Jochen Steigner, and Alexander Pfalzgraf. Co-founder Norbert Pfleger had a background as a researcher at DFKI in the field of intelligent user interfaces.
The company's core technology platform, geni:OS (and its predecessor ODP S3), provides a development environment for creating intelligent and proactive virtual assistants. This platform enables the integration of voice control, gesture, and touch inputs, allowing for more natural interaction with complex systems. A key feature of geni:OS is its ability to be deployed on-premise or in the cloud, giving clients full control over their sensitive data. SemVox's solutions cater to various industries, with a strong focus on the automotive sector, as well as medical technology, industrial applications, and robotics. Its technology has been integrated into over 20 million cars.
The business model focuses on providing its core technology and supporting clients in developing their own customized voice and assistance solutions. SemVox became a subsidiary of paragon GmbH & Co. KGaA in 2018, forming a new business division for digital assistance. In 2022, it was announced that CARIAD, the software company of the Volkswagen Group, would acquire the company, a move that was completed in 2023, making SemVox a wholly-owned subsidiary of CARIAD SE.
