SeenIt operates as a community-driven fashion discovery platform, conceptualized as a "visual Quora for fashion." The company was founded in April 2015 by three Wharton School graduates: Ankita Sancheti, Saksham Karwal, and Vedanta Kumar. The inspiration for the platform arose when Kumar and Karwal experienced difficulty finding a specific pair of sunglasses featured in a James Bond film. This personal frustration highlighted a gap between seeing a fashion item and being able to purchase it, a market they estimated to be worth $50 billion globally.
The platform enables users to post an image of a fashion item they have seen—whether on social media, television, or in a magazine—and the community of fellow users and in-house stylists helps to identify the product and provide links to where it can be purchased. This model leverages a passionate user base to generate content and solve fashion-related queries, with questions reportedly being answered within five to seven minutes. By early 2017, the platform reported having 500,000 monthly active users and was processing over 5,000 questions and answers each week.
SeenIt's business model focuses on driving traffic to e-commerce partners, generating revenue through affiliate links and partnerships with brands. The company established itself as a significant traffic driver for major fashion e-commerce platforms in India and secured partnerships with notable brands like Nike and Puma. In February 2017, the Calcutta-based startup raised an undisclosed amount in a pre-Series A funding round from Calcutta Angels Network (CAN) and Augment Ventures. This capital was intended for talent acquisition, marketing efforts, and the introduction of new features such as a personalized feed and on-platform transactions.
