Sedibelo Resources Ltd. is a mineral exploration and development company focused on Platinum Group Metals (PGM) in South Africa. Founded in 1999 and formerly known as Sedibelo Platinum Mines, the company's primary asset is the Pilanesberg Platinum Mine (PPM), an open-pit operation on the western limb of the Bushveld Complex that began production in 2008. The company's business model involves the acquisition, exploration, development, and operation of PGM deposits and associated base metals. Its operations include open-cast pits, a PGM concentrator, and a chromite recovery plant.
A key strategic initiative is the development and implementation of the Kell process, a proprietary hydrometallurgical technology for processing PGM concentrates. This technology is positioned as a more environmentally friendly and cost-effective alternative to traditional smelting, as it significantly reduces energy consumption and eliminates sulphur dioxide emissions. The Kell process allows for the production of refined metals directly at the mine site, which can lower operating costs and reduce the carbon footprint compared to conventional methods. The company holds an exclusive license for the Kell technology within most of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region. Sedibelo plans to use the technology at its own Kell Processing Plant, expected to be operational around 2025, and also offer refining services for third-party concentrates.
Sedibelo is advancing two primary expansion projects: the Triple Crown Properties, a brownfield expansion of the PPM, and the greenfield Mphahlele Project on the Eastern Limb of the Bushveld Complex. The company's investor base includes institutional and international shareholders such as the Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa (IDC), Gemfields Group, and the Bakgatla-Ba-Kgafela Tribe. In July 2022, Sedibelo filed for a dual listing on the New York Stock Exchange and the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, but later withdrew the plans in August 2023 due to market conditions. In January 2025, the company announced a successful capital raise of at least $19 million through a combination of debt and equity to be used for working capital and development.
