SDL Enterprise Technologies

SDL Enterprise Technologies was the corporate entity resulting from the acquisition of Idiom Technologies, Inc. by SDL plc in February 2008. Idiom Technologies, originally established in 1998, operated in the internet software and services sector, providing software-as-a-service (SaaS) solutions for global information management. The acquisition, valued at approximately $22 million, was part of SDL's broader strategy to integrate content management and translation technologies, following its purchase of Tridion in 2007.

As a business unit within SDL, the focus was on combining Idiom's globalization and translation management software with SDL's extensive portfolio. This integration aimed to help large organizations manage and deliver multilingual content across their global operations. The product suite catered to enterprises needing to streamline their localization processes, from content creation to translation and publishing. This was particularly relevant for clients using web content management systems, where seamless integration with a translation workflow was critical for efficiency.

The parent company, SDL plc, was a multinational firm founded in 1992, specializing in language translation software, services, and content management solutions. Over its history, SDL executed a significant growth-by-acquisition strategy, purchasing numerous companies to build a comprehensive technology stack. This journey culminated in November 2020, when RWS Holdings acquired the entire SDL group in a transformative deal for the language services industry. Following this final acquisition, the SDL brand, including its various technology divisions, was absorbed and rebranded under RWS.
