SchemaLogic, founded in 2001 and headquartered in Kirkland, Washington, operated as a provider of metadata management and business semantics software for enterprises. The company's core business was centered on enabling large organizations to model, structure, and manage the relationships within their corporate knowledge and content. Its client base included prominent companies in the publishing, media, and manufacturing sectors, such as Boeing and Amgen.
The firm developed an enterprise software suite, with its flagship product being SchemaServer. This platform allowed business and semantic model standards to be created, refined, and distributed to various systems within a company. The suite also included tools for real-time data access, integration services using a publication/subscription model, and client interfaces for accessing the platform's functionality. SchemaLogic's technology was designed to complement existing investments in business intelligence, content management, and enterprise search solutions by adding a layer of 'content intelligence'. This was achieved by endowing systems with semantic capabilities like taxonomy management and automatic classification to better organize and access unstructured content such as documents, presentations, and web pages.
SchemaLogic was a venture-capital-backed firm, having raised a total of $28.4M over its lifetime. Investors included Madrona Venture Group, ARTIS Ventures, Chevron Technology Ventures, and Goldman Sachs. A significant milestone was a $12.8 million funding round in 2007. The company's journey culminated on September 15, 2011, when it was acquired by Smartlogic, a UK-based information retrieval software company, for an undisclosed amount. The acquisition was a strategic move by Smartlogic to expand its U.S. presence and solidify its position in the content intelligence market. Following the acquisition, SchemaLogic's SchemaServer was integrated into Smartlogic's main offering, the Semaphore platform. The story continued as Smartlogic itself was later acquired by MarkLogic in November 2021, which was subsequently acquired by Progress in early 2023.
