In 1989, long before the 'Internet of Things' was a common term, Savi Technology was founded with a forward-thinking concept: using technology to provide real-time visibility into the location and status of assets. The company developed a suite of hardware, including active RFID tags and sensors, and the software to make sense of the data they generated. This system was designed to solve complex logistics challenges for large organizations. The most significant early adopter of Savi's technology was the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD). The military needed to track vast quantities of supplies and equipment across the globe, and Savi provided the solution. This partnership became foundational, with the DoD's RF-ITV network, built on Savi's technology, becoming the world's largest active RFID system for tracking consignments. Over the years, Savi became the sole provider for multiple iterations of the DoD's RFID contracts, supplying millions of IoT devices. A major chapter in Savi's story unfolded in 2006 when it was acquired by the defense giant Lockheed Martin. This move integrated Savi's logistics technology into one of the world's premier technology and defense companies. However, the journey took another turn in 2012 when Lockheed Martin spun Savi off, and it was acquired by a group of private investors affiliated with LaSalle Capital. This returned Savi to its status as a more nimble, independent entity, allowing it to pursue a broader range of global opportunities.
