Sandwell Community Caring Trust (SCCT) is a registered charity established in 1997 to provide care, accommodation, and support services. Emerging from the Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council, the organization operates as a social enterprise, reinvesting profits to enhance its services. The trust serves older people, including those with dementia, and adults with learning disabilities and complex health needs across the Black Country and Torbay. Its services include residential homes, day care, supported living in individual properties, and respite care, aiming to help individuals achieve maximum independence.
The organization was founded in 1997. Geoff Walker, the Chief Executive Officer, has been a significant figure in the social enterprise movement and was shortlisted for the Most People-Focused CEO at the HR Excellence Awards in 2011. Under his leadership, the trust has grown from 85 staff and 62 customers to over 600 staff and 700 customers. Key milestones include taking over three care homes from Sandwell Council in 2011 to prevent their closure and securing a £4.2 million investment in 2014 from Unity Trust Bank and Big Issue Invest to purchase new care home facilities. The organization also expanded to provide NHS and social services in Torbay in 2008.
SCCT's business model is that of a charitable company limited by guarantee, providing health and social care services. Its primary clients are older people and adults with physical or learning disabilities, often referred through social services or direct payments. Revenue is generated through contracts with local authorities and the NHS. The trust provides a range of needs-led care packages, from a few hours a day to 24-hour support, in various accommodation types, including individual flats and shared bungalows. This model focuses on providing a 'home for life' and maintaining a high standard of care, which is reflected in consistently low staff turnover.
