SAFIA Technologies GmbH operates as a specialized developer and producer of advanced analysis kits for contaminant detection in the food and feed industries. Established in July 2022 by Dr. Peter Carl and Dr. Timm Schwaar, the company originated as a spin-off from the esteemed Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) in Berlin, Germany. The founders leverage their scientific backgrounds to address the critical need for more efficient and comprehensive safety testing in the food supply chain.
The core of the company's offering is its proprietary Suspension Array Fluorescence Immunoassay (SAFIA) technology. This particle-based multiplex immunoassay platform enables the simultaneous and rapid analysis of multiple analytes in a single measurement. The technology utilizes dye-encoded microparticles, allowing for the parallel detection of up to 12 different contaminants, such as EU-regulated mycotoxins (mold toxins), with a maximum execution time of 35 minutes. This mix-and-measure method simplifies sample preparation, eliminating time-consuming washing steps, and the final reading is performed automatically by a flow cytometer.
SAFIA Technologies targets commercial food analysis laboratories and quality assurance departments within food production companies. By providing a solution that is significantly faster and more cost-effective than traditional chromatographic methods, the business model is centered on the sale of these analysis kits. This allows clients to enhance their sample throughput and protect consumers from potential health hazards while helping food companies avoid costly product recalls. The company has received grant funding from Freie Universität Berlin and has entered into a sales cooperation agreement with Sysmex Partec to distribute its kits internationally.
