RUMM (Remote Utility Monitoring & Management) is a specialist energy management firm that utilizes cloud-based data analytics to assist businesses in monitoring, controlling, and reducing their energy consumption in real-time. Founded in 2005 as a spin-out from the University of South Wales, the company was established by Dr. Stephen Lloyd and Jamie Watkins. RUMM serves large industrial and commercial clients, including notable companies like BT, Tata Steel, McDonald's, and Sainsbury's.
The company's core offering is its proprietary software, IBASS, which captures and stores energy usage data at half-hour intervals. This data is then analyzed to identify inefficiencies and provide actionable insights for significant energy reduction. The system offers a full energy management solution, including the installation of a metering infrastructure, web-based technology for consumption analysis, and dedicated energy management services. Beyond technological solutions, RUMM also emphasizes a partnership approach, working closely with clients on-site and even employing a Low Carbon Psychologist to address non-technical, behavioral aspects of energy saving.
In April 2015, RUMM was acquired by RWE npower for a sum reportedly between £8 million and £10 million. This acquisition was a strategic investment for npower Business Solutions, the second-largest energy supplier to UK businesses at the time, to roll out RUMM's technology to its largest customers. The company remained in its Ystrad Mynach, Wales office following the deal. By the time of the acquisition, RUMM had already helped its customers save over £43 million in energy costs. According to UK government records, RUMM Limited was officially dissolved on May 26, 2019.
