ROX Motor is an automotive manufacturer established in Shanghai, China, in January 2021 by co-founders Chang Jing and Jarvis Yan. The company specializes in the design and production of off-road capable new energy vehicles, targeting a market of outdoor lifestyle enthusiasts. The founding vision was shaped by Chang Jing's background as a successful serial entrepreneur, notably as the founder and CEO of the robotic vacuum cleaner company Roborock, and his self-described "product-oriented" approach. This experience in consumer electronics and product management informs the company's focus on integrating technology and user-centric design. CEO Jarvis Yan contributes extensive automotive industry expertise, having previously served as the head of information and intelligent systems at SAIC Motor Group.
The company's business model initially focused on providing automotive engineering, product definition, and intelligent technology solutions to vehicle companies with established manufacturing capabilities, a strategy that has been compared to Huawei's role in the automotive sector. ROX Motor's primary revenue stream is the direct sale of its vehicles. This is supplemented by income from after-sales services, including maintenance, repairs, and parts, as well as vehicle customization options. The company has secured significant capital, raising a total of $1 billion over several funding rounds, with notable investors including Tencent and Sequoia Capital.
ROX Motor's flagship product is the ROX 01, a full-size, extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) designed as a luxury all-terrain SUV. Officially unveiled in August 2023, the vehicle is available in six and seven-seat configurations, catering to families. The ROX 01's powertrain combines a 1.5L turbocharged gasoline engine that functions as a range extender with two electric motors, delivering a total system output of 350 kW and 740 N·m of torque. This hybrid system provides a purely electric WLTC range of 235 km and a combined hybrid range of over 1,100 km from its 56 kWh CATL battery and 70-liter fuel tank. The vehicle features advanced technology such as a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip for the cockpit, multiple large-format screens including a 15.7-inch central touch screen, and a comprehensive intelligent driving system supported by Lidar, cameras, and Nvidia Orin-X chips.
Since its inception, ROX Motor has expanded rapidly. Following the start of ROX 01 deliveries in November 2023, the company has pursued an aggressive global strategy. It has established sales and service networks in over 20 countries across the Middle East, Central Asia, Africa, and other emerging markets, with overseas orders and deliveries surpassing 10,000 units. A key strategic development is a manufacturing partnership with W Motors in the UAE, marking the company's first production activities outside of China.
