Roll.gg is a chat application that provides a virtual tabletop for users to play board games with friends and family remotely. The platform aims to foster social connections and friendship formation by creating a shared context for interaction beyond simple conversation. The application is accessible from phones or web browsers.
Co-founded by CEO Mike Roberts and Mike Chang, who have a decade-long history of collaboration through companies like Kick, Kin, and Snap, Roll was born from a desire to replicate the social experience of game nights in a mobile format. Roberts, with a background that includes database vendor Sybase and founding another gaming company, identified a gap in the market for mobile platforms that facilitate building shared history and connection through gameplay.
The platform offers a low-code environment, allowing creators and third parties to build and integrate their own games. By the end of 2023, Roll planned to have its Android and web versions available, complementing its existing iOS application, to be accessible across all three platforms.
