RiverStreet Networks operates as a subsidiary of Wilkes Communications, a member-owned cooperative with a rich history dating back to 1951. Originally established as Wilkes Telephone Membership Corporation by a group of local citizens in Wilkes County, North Carolina, the company's initial mission was to provide essential telephone services to rural areas. In August 2024, Wilkes Communications and RiverStreet Networks announced their unification under the single brand name, RiverStreet, to simplify their identity and reinforce their presence in the communities they serve.
The company's evolution is marked by significant technological advancements and strategic growth. A pivotal moment was the completion of a county-wide fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) network in Wilkes County in 2014, enabling gigabit internet speeds for all its members. This achievement laid the groundwork for expansion beyond its original service area, leading to the establishment of the RiverStreet Networks brand to cater to customers outside of Wilkes County. The company's growth strategy has been heavily driven by acquisitions, purchasing over 13 companies in the last decade, and expanding its footprint across North Carolina and Virginia. This expansion is supported by substantial funding, including a $191 million credit facility from CoBank and over $260 million in federal and state grants to bridge the digital divide in rural communities.
Under the leadership of President and CEO Eric Cramer, who joined in 2005 and was appointed CEO in 2010, RiverStreet has aggressively pursued growth and technological upgrades. Cramer's background includes extensive experience in telecommunications regulatory and financial consulting, which has informed the company's strategic direction. The business model is centered on providing comprehensive communication and technology solutions to residential and business clients in unserved and underserved rural markets. Revenue is generated through a diverse portfolio of services, including high-speed fiber internet, fixed wireless internet, digital TV (streaming and IPTV), VoIP phone systems, and security and alarm services. The company serves approximately 30,000 customers across dozens of counties in North Carolina and Virginia, with ongoing expansion projects.
