RIPS Technologies GmbH operated as a specialized entity in the cybersecurity sector, focusing on static application security testing (SAST). Founded in Bochum, Germany, in 2016, the company emerged from the academic and consulting background of its co-founder, Dr. Johannes Dahse. Dahse's journey began with an open-source PHP analysis tool he developed in 2010. His doctoral research in IT security at Ruhr-University Bochum and experience as a security consultant informed the creation of the commercial enterprise.
The firm developed a sophisticated security analysis platform designed to automatically detect vulnerabilities in the source code of web applications. Its core business was providing this technology to clients, enabling them to identify and remediate security flaws early in the development lifecycle. The platform was recognized for its precision and speed, employing context-sensitive taint analysis to uncover complex security issues in languages such as PHP, Java, and JavaScript. The business model centered on selling its SAST software, which was available as both an on-premises installation and a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solution, targeting industrial customers and development teams.
A significant milestone in the company's history was its acquisition by the Swiss code quality and security solutions provider, SonarSource, in May 2020. The acquisition was a strategic move for SonarSource to enhance its own SAST capabilities by integrating RIPS' advanced analysis technology. Following the transaction, the RIPS team, including CEO Johannes Dahse who became SonarSource's Head of R&D, was integrated into SonarSource, and the Bochum office became a new location for the parent company. The RIPS tool is no longer available as a standalone product but its technology has been merged into SonarSource's product suite, which includes SonarQube, SonarLint, and SonarCloud.
