The Rimac Group is a Croatian automotive company specializing in electric hypercars and providing high-performance electric vehicle (EV) technology to global manufacturers. The group comprises two main divisions: Bugatti Rimac, which develops and manufactures hypercars under the Bugatti and Rimac Automobili brands, and the fully-owned subsidiary Rimac Technology, a Tier-1 supplier of EV components such as battery systems, e-axles, and control units.
The company's origins trace back to 2007, when founder Mate Rimac began converting his 1984 BMW E30 into an electric vehicle in his garage after its gasoline engine failed during a race. This project, nicknamed the "Green Monster," set several world records for electric car acceleration and brought attention to Rimac's work. Officially founded in 2009 in Sveta Nedelja, Croatia, Rimac Automobili was established with the vision of creating the high-performance electric sports car of the 21st century. Born in Livno, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and having spent part of his youth in Germany before moving to Croatia, Mate Rimac's passion for cars and technology from a young age drove him to establish a car industry in a country that had none.
The business operates a diversified model. Revenue is generated from the direct sale of its limited-run, high-performance hypercars, like the Concept_One and the Nevera. A significant and growing portion of its business comes from Rimac Technology, which serves as a B2B supplier, providing advanced EV components and full-vehicle development services to other automotive manufacturers, including Aston Martin, Koenigsegg, Porsche, and Hyundai. This dual approach allows the hypercar division to act as a testbed for new technologies before they are offered to OEM clients.
In November 2021, a major joint venture was formed with Porsche, creating Bugatti Rimac. The Rimac Group is the majority shareholder with a 55% stake, while Porsche holds the remaining 45%. This structure united Bugatti's century-old heritage in luxury and craftsmanship with Rimac's advanced electrification technology. The group has attracted significant investment from entities like SoftBank Vision Fund 2, Goldman Sachs Asset Management, and InvestIndustrial, culminating in a Series D funding round that valued the company at over €2 billion.
