Resonext Communications Inc. operated as a fabless semiconductor company, specializing in the development of integrated silicon complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) wireless local area network (WLAN) solutions. The company was founded in 2000 and was led by President and CEO David Tahmassebi. By June 2002, Resonext had successfully raised a total of $68.5 million in funding since its inception, with investors including Norwest Venture Partners, WK Technology Fund, and Oak Investment Partners, among others.
The company focused on providing integrated two-chip CMOS solutions for the 5 gigahertz and dual-band WLAN platforms, targeting the 802.11a and multiband (802.11a/b/g) standards. Its client base consisted of original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), original development manufacturers (ODMs), and both enterprise and consumer WLAN system providers. Resonext's product lineup, such as the RN5200 two-chip solution, integrated a zero-IF 5-GHz CMOS radio, a media access controller (MAC), and its proprietary AccuChannel equalization technology, which was designed to provide greater range and performance. These solutions were compliant with the 802.11a standard, supporting data rates up to 54 megabits-per-second.
In a strategic move to enhance its position in the WLAN chipset market, RF Micro Devices Inc. announced its agreement to acquire Resonext Communications in October 2002. The acquisition was officially completed on December 20, 2002, for approximately $104 million to $133 million in stock. The deal was intended to bolster RFMD's presence in the 802.11b market and expand its addressable market to include 802.11a and dual-band offerings. RF Micro Devices later merged with TriQuint Semiconductor in 2015 to form Qorvo.
