Remotium
Mobile data security solutions for enterprises.
Remotium operated in the enterprise mobility and mobile security sector, providing a solution to the challenges presented by bring-your-own-device (BYOD) policies in corporate environments. The company was acquired by Avast Software on July 8, 2015, for an undisclosed amount, a move that allowed Avast to expand its mobile security offerings into the enterprise space. Prior to its acquisition, Remotium had secured $1 million in a funding round on April 16, 2013, from investors including DNX Ventures and CyberAgent Capital. The entire Remotium team, based in San Mateo, California, joined Avast following the acquisition.
Remotium's flagship product was the Virtual Mobile Platform (VMP), a mobile virtualization technology designed to give employees secure access to business-critical applications from any mobile or desktop device. The VMP worked by housing corporate data and applications on a secure server, which then streamed a visual representation to the user's device. This architecture ensured that no corporate data was stored on the personal device, mitigating risks associated with malware, device loss or theft, and data breaches. The platform provided a consistent user experience across different devices and operating systems, like iOS and Android, while giving IT departments centralized management and control over corporate assets. This approach addressed data integrity, corporate compliance, and user privacy simultaneously.
The company's technology was recognized with several awards, including being named "Most Innovative Company" at the RSA Conference in 2013 and winning a Best of Show award at Interop Tokyo in 2015. Remotium's business model targeted enterprises struggling to balance security with the flexibility demanded by a mobile workforce. By virtualizing the mobile environment, the company offered a scalable and cost-effective alternative to traditional Mobile Device Management (MDM) solutions.
