Founded in 2017 by U.S. Air Force veteran Michael Fraser, Korrine Fraser, and Anthony Rowlands, the company was based in Bellevue, Washington. The founders aimed to create a platform that would simplify and accelerate the adoption of modern DevOps workflows for IT and security teams.
The core of Refactr's offering was its versatile, low-code automation platform. It featured a visual drag-and-drop builder, enabling cybersecurity teams to create and implement security and IT automation without extensive coding knowledge. Simultaneously, it catered to developers with features like an SDK and YAML-based automation, fostering collaboration between security and development departments on a single platform. The platform integrated with common DevOps tools like Ansible, Terraform, and Kubernetes, as well as various CI/CD workflows, to automate processes such as compliance checks, container scanning, and cloud security management. Refactr targeted both private and public sector clients, securing notable customers like the Center for Internet Security (CIS) and the U.S. Air Force's Platform One.
The company operated on a freemium and paid subscription model. A significant milestone was its acquisition by the global cybersecurity leader Sophos in August 2021. Sophos acquired Refactr to integrate its Security Orchestration, Automation, and Response (SOAR) capabilities into its own Managed Threat Response (MTR) and Extended Detection and Response (XDR) solutions. Following the acquisition, the Refactr platform was evolved into what is now known as Sophos Factory, and the entire Refactr team joined Sophos to continue developing the technology.
